What is AB 466?AB 466 is an Assembly Bill passed by the California Legislature in 2001; it established the Mathematics and Reading Professional Development program. This bill created a grant that gives funding for professional development in mathematics and reading/language arts. Trainers are approved by the State Board of Education. These trainings focus on enhancing a teacher’s ability to use state-adopted materials.
What are the Reading/Language Arts trainings like?In Woodland, our AB 466 trainings are 40-hour Training Institutes.
32 hours (80%) of the training will focus on the instructional program and 19.2 (60% of 32 hours) will focus on the first ten weeks of instruction. The remaining eight hours focus on program research, standards, framework, and the instructional value of diagnostic and standardized tests.
Daily instructional time during training includes:
- 30% direct instruction and presentation
- 20% demonstrations of successful teaching strategies
- 50% practice, discussions (large and small groups) and other activities
DAY ONE: program overview, components, diagnostic assessment, and week one of instruction for each grade
DAY TWO through DAY FOUR: focus on weeks 2-10, including embedding standards and assessment (ongoing, formal, informal and theme assessment), differentiated instruction, and classroom management
DAY FIVE: focuses on the remainder of the year, ongoing and summative assessments
What are the math trainings like?
- Learn to use textbook resources to support the needs of all students
- Develop critical understanding of research related to mathematics instruction - TIMSS, state framework, English Language Learners and universal access
- Engage in professional dialogue related to textbook resources, state and federal documents and best practices
- Plan and develop textbook-based instruction for the first half of the school year
